Bucharest field trip – September 7

Bucharest – the city that saw it all.

Keywords: middle age sum of villages, interwar modern metropolis, communist capital, capitalist democracy.

This field trip will consist in a guided walk around Bucharest city center, with its complex variety of history, architecture, planning projects and traditions. It will take three hours.

Meeting point is in front of the Faculty of Geography at 09:00.

Key stepping stones: (i) Parcul Cismigiu – the oldest and the largest park in the center, situated next to the City Hall; (ii) Parcul Operei – a park with a new face, close to a communist era relic building; (iii) Parcul Romniceanu – in the calm Cotroceni neighborhood, full of Neo-Romanian to Art Deco and Modernist buildings, enveloped in omnipresent green; (iv) Parcul Izvor – where old parts of the city were brought down during communist time to make room for a huge redesign, including the now Palace of Parliament; (v) Mănăstirea Stavropoleos – the peace of an interior garden and of serene souls;

After the trip, participants can decide to stop in the historical center for a drink or a snack, at their own expenses.
